Our high school track and field coach would start the season with a speech that went something like this: “Some of you are just born with wheels, some of you aren’t. There’s not much we can do about that, but with training and practice, we can get you all better times.”

I didn’t realize, until reading this essay, that I was not raised with the belief that there will always be someone better than me. I acquired that belief pretty quickly, and I agree that the intellectual humility it imparts is super important. But my father (possibly a narcissist?) has never believed there was someone better suited than him for the work he believes to be his calling.
